On Plato
Plato (c. 428–348 BC) was one of the most influential philosophers in Western history, a pivotal figure in classical Athens during the Golden Age of ancient Greece. Born into an aristocratic family, he was originally named Aristocles but earned the nickname “Plato” (meaning “broad,” possibly referring to his forehead or wrestling build). A student of Socrates and later the teacher of Aristotle, he founded the Academy in Athens around 387 BC, widely regarded as the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Disillusioned by the political turmoil of his time, including the execution of Socrates in 399 BC, Plato turned to philosophy as a means to seek truth, justice, and the ideal organization of society.
Plato’s philosophy is well-known, particularly his Theory of Forms, which holds that the physical world we experience is merely a shadow of a higher, eternal realm containing perfect, unchanging ideas or Forms, such as Beauty, Justice, and the Good. Plato books, nearly all written as dramatic Plato’s dialogues featuring Socrates as the main character, include masterpieces like the Plato Republic (exploring justice, the ideal state, and the philosopher-king) and the Plato Symposium (on love and beauty), alongside others such as Phaedo (on the immortality of the soul) and Apology (Socrates’ defense at his trial).
Through these accessible yet profound texts, Plato shaped fields ranging from ethics and politics to metaphysics and epistemology, making his dialogues and overall philosophy foundational reading that continues to influence education and political theory more than two millennia later.
