Reading is one of the most worthwhile activities you can get involved in and if someone asked me what I would recommend I’d say they should read ancient history.
Books open up your mind and allow you to see things in different ways, enhancing the human experience. Like you train your body, whether it be through sports, such as football or tennis, or going to the gym, you should train your mind. There is no better way of doing this than sitting down, maybe with a coffee, and reading a great book.
Now, why ancient history? It doesn’t matter who you are, you can learn something from the past and look no further than Rome and Athens. Great authors, like Plato and Aristotle, offer timeless wisdom on a variety of topics. When reading these brilliant writers, as well as so many others, you will be captured by their works for their immeasurable benefits, but you will also find attachment through enjoyment.
From my experience, you will enjoy reading great books of the past for their value, which is undeniable, and for the content itself. Learning about what is the good life, like the concept of Eudaimonia in The Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle, or the examination of the types of government, as discussed by Plato in The Republic, transforms the way you think.
This is just scratching the surface. On Ancient Greece, there is Herodotus and Thucydides. On Roman History, there is Livy and Tacitus. If you want to read about the great men of the ancient world then Plutarch is unrivaled. If you’re looking for a modern study of history there is Tom Holland, author of Pax, and Adrian Goldsworthy, author of Caesar.
The list goes on. There is so much to explore. It is its own adventure.
